Leaving aside the slightly pretentious name, is the HTC Incredible S as good a device as some of the current and newly released HTCs on the market or is it making up for inadequacies with its title?
Well the HTC looks good, very like a HTC apart from its rubber back, which may not be to everyone’s tastes. However, it does feel good in the hand and also very sturdy – a trait HTC is currently pushing with its phones. It weighs in at slightly over 135g and is a fairly average sized phone.
It is a little hefty at the back with thin edges and could be considered quirky and industrial or considered ugly – depends on your tastes. The front is stylish though, with the usual HTC glass front and touch buttons which disappear when the screen goes off and turn anti clockwise when the display is rotated to landscape mode.
The phone’s Snapdragon processor is a 1GHz chip and is quite fast, though doesn’t give the phone the feel of a next generation dual core device. It’s a fast enough machine though and there is little noticeable lag when using it. Its 768mb of RAM is decent in size but still finds it hard to compete with the 1GB memory in other devices.
The phone comes with a dual LED and a good 8mp camera with 720p recording capabilities. The dual LED lights do help the HTC in poor light and ensure it makes the most of the 8mp it has. Its camcorder option records at 30fps and looks smooth on playback, especially on the HTC’s 4in 400×800 screen. The HTC Incredible S also has the advantage of an additional camera for video talk, a 1.3mp front facing affair.
The Incredible does currently use Android 2.2 Froyo, which is a bit of a shame considering that 2.3 Gingerbread is shipping on most new handsets. However, the HTC Sense interface the Incredible S uses is as smooth as its gorilla glass screen and is a great addition to the already excellent Android OS.
Naturally, HTC Incredible S is great in connectivity terms and comes with Wi-Fi, DNLA connectivity, a mini USB port and Bluetooth but sadly no HDMI port. The device also comes with the possibility to upgrade to 32GB via SD card and comes with 8GB of memory.
The HTC Incredible S is a good phone, solid in the way it feels and solid in the way it performs. However, if you are looking for something that’s absolutely top-of-the-range, there are devices available with a little more oomph.
