Top 5 Android Phones of 2011

Android has quickly overtaken the iPhone as the industry leader in smart phones with more than 43% of all handsets on the market today being of the Android variety. Innovation and better technology have propelled Android ahead of its competition so much so that the release line-up for 2011 is currently the strongest Android experience yet. Here are the top five Android handsets released in 2011.

1. Samsung Galaxy S II

The Galaxy S 2 is the popular successor to Samsung’s Galaxy S line of phones which did extremely well in 2010. It only makes sense that Samsung would follow-up that success with a new line of phones with even more beefy processors and running on Gingerbread by default. The phone currently features a 4.3″ Super AMOLED plus display with a whopping 8 megapixel camera, along with a front facing 2MP camera in the front. The processor is a 1GHz dual-core beast with 1 GB of RAM. All of this is packed into one of the thinnest phones available on the market, making the Galaxy S II the best Android phone of 2011.

2. Samsung Infuse 4G

The Infuse is considered a first generation Galaxy S phone, but it makes the list because it is the first and last of that generation to support 4G mobile broadband. It has a comfortable 4″ display that also features a Super AMOLED screen, along with a 1GHz single core processor and 512MB of RAM. The 16GB internal SD card offers plenty of storage capacity with a nice battery life to keep you on the go no matter where you are.

3. HTC Thunderbolt

HTC has long been one of the best makers of Android handsets on the market and the Thunderbolt was the crowning achievement of 2011 for the company. It shipped running Android 2.2 Froyo and offered a big 4.3″ screen with plenty of room for watching movies and other media using mobile broadband. It only has 8GBs of internal storage, but it offers 768MB of RAM to make up for the lack of storage space. It can be expanded with a micro SD slot just like the previous Samsung models. It also features a 1GHz single core processor and around a 7 hour battery life.

4. Sony Xperia Play

The Sony Xperia Play had the distinction of being the official PlayStation phone available on the market. The slide out touch control pad also features the standard arrow keys and buttons most PlayStation fans are familiar with, but under the hood the Xperia Play is also a beast. It comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread as a standard and features a large 4″ screen with a backlit LCD touchscreen for displaying your games in all their glory. The 1GHz single core Scorpion processor features plenty of processing power with 512MB of RAM for running multiple tasks. The Xperia Play has around an 8 hour battery life.

5. Motorola DROID Bionic

The DROID line is credited with getting Android in the hands of the masses and making it a popular alternative to the iPhone and Motorola continues its streak of innovation with the DROID Bionic. It features a large 4.3″ LCD screen for stunning colours, and under the hood it has a 1GHz dual core processor for all the power you need to run the latest apps and games using mobile broadband. It also features 16GBs of internal storage that can be extended with a micro SD card. Total talk time for the device is around 8 to 10 hours.
